What Is Emotional Burnout?
Psychology Today defines emotional burnout as “a state in which one feels worn-out mentally because of accumulated stress from a situation in their personal life.” Every individual is at risk of experiencing emotional burnout, and it could occur at any stage in one’s life. Medical News Today provides the following examples of triggers that could lead to emotional burnout:
- Working long hours
- Going through a significant life change (e.g. death of a loved one, divorce, etc.)
- Experiencing financial stress
- Being homeless
- Living with a chronic medical condition
- Being a caregiver
- Having a baby
- Working in a high-pressure environment
- Raising children
- Juggling several things at once (e.g. work, family, school, etc.)
Not all people will be emotionally triggered in the same way by the same experiences. What may be stressful for one individual could be completely manageable for another individual.
Signs and Symptoms
Every person has different tolerance levels and abilities for coping with life’s challenges. Emotional burnout can manifest as signs and symptoms that are both emotional and physical, and could include any combination of the following examples, as provided by the Mayo Clinic:
- Chronic fatigue
- Insomnia
- Impaired concentration
- Forgetfulness
- Loss of appetite
- Anxiety
- Anger
- Depression
- Pessimism
- Detachment
- Irritability
- Apathy
- Feeling hopeless
- Lack of motivation
One of the most common signs of emotional burnout is emotional exhaustion. Regardless of where the chronic stress originates, an individual that is exposed to prolong and constant stress is at increased risk for experiencing emotional burnout.
The Treatment Process
In order to mitigate emotional burnout, most individuals will need to make lifestyle changes. Obtaining professional mental health guidance can help an individual address the causes and symptoms of that led to emotional burnout. The treatment process for emotional burnout must be comprised of a customized treatment plan that is completely informed by and tailored to the individual’s nuanced needs. This process is all encompassing, as individuals are encouraged to evaluate unhelpful habits and patterns that have been established in their daily lives that contribute to perpetuating the cycle of emotional exhaustion. In treatment, individuals will learn to implement healthful lifestyle choices (e.g. exercising regularly, obtaining ample sleep, eating nutritiously, engaging in mindfulness practices, etc.) learn effective stress-management strategies, and useful coping mechanisms.
